self checkouts at retailers

Self Checkouts Cost Jobs

I am totally against the use of self checkouts at Home Depot and other retail businesses. I believe that they cost jobs. I also believe that if we continue to use them eventually there will be more and more of them, and fewer and fewer cahier jobs. I shopped at Home Depot last Friday and when I went up front to pay for my items found that there were no checkouts open. The self checkout however was open. I told the clerk that was monitoring these self checkouts that I needed to take my items to a cashier and she informed me that none were available and that I should use the self checkout which I refused to do. I asked to speak to the store manager and the monitor called for him. He didn’t come to speak to me but told the monitor to tell me that I should take my items to the service desk which I did. The service desk employee rang the items up.

I went back there again on Saturday to pick up a couple more items and there was one checkout open but it was somewhat backed up. The cashier at the self checkout volunteered to ring up my items after I told her my policy of no self checkout. She told me that she didn’t feel that self checkouts eliminated jobs and I asked her how many of these checkouts was she monitoring and she said four. The store wasn’t real busy but I could see that if it was she would certainly be replacing three cashiers.

We citizens complain to our government that there are no jobs and yet we don’t help the situation when we use these self checkouts there by helping these big corporations reduce the amount of employees that they would normally have. The corporations might respond by stating that they are simply trying to keep costs down for the consumer. I don’t buy this argument at all. I feel that these mega-corporations have one goal and that goal is their bottom line period.

I will continue to refuse to use self checkouts.

chiken hawks

I discovered Link tv a few months ago and have become addicted! It gives a completely different view on world situations. Last night was devoted to Bush, Rumsfeld and that bloated hog Cheney who just refuses to do the world a favor and have a fatal heart attack! The program showed how our nation was deliberately misled into thinking that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction so we could get into Iraq and set up military bases.

The program the night before was all about Viet Nam and all of the protesters as well as the soldiers who simply refused to fight and kill anymore babies and women. One statement stuck with me. One protester was accused of not being patriotic because he didn't support the troops and the war. He answered that a person can be just as patriotic when he opposes the wrong doings of his country.

I got off of my duff and called to donate money to Link as soon as the program was over. This is the first time that I have given money to a tv or radio station. PBS is good but they have begun taking advertizing money and will soon be told what they can and can not say.

There are other worthwhile programs such as Aljazeera and Mosaic which come on at 10 and 10:30 repectively. Mosaic actually plays news broadcast from inside the Arab countries and then translates. It is a perspective that you will never hear on any stations in this country.

I have Direct tv and find Link on channel 375
